With 2023 in full swing and the stress of the festive season well and truly behind us, now is the perfect time to start focusing on the goals you’ve set for yourself.

For some of us, this looks like eating healthier and finally putting our gym memberships to good use, but for others, it looks more like getting our homes in order.

You likely have a few project ideas sitting in your Pinterest boards for your kitchen or living room – but have you paid any attention to your staircase?

It could be in some serious need of TLC, and while replacing odd parts will certainly breathe some life back into it, there’s nothing like starting fresh. Especially for the new year.

There’s lots to think about – materials, colours, and shapes.

Straight staircases

Straight staircases feature a single, linear flight of steps with no change in direction.

They’re one of the cleanest, most cost-effective stair shapes to construct and install – and they work well in minimalist-designed houses, thanks to their inherent simplicity.

You might not think it, but straight staircases require more space compared to spiral or L-shaped staircases, for example, so they aren’t the best option if you have limited space.

Spiral staircases

The spiral staircase features a compact design centre around a single pole – so that if you looked at it from above, it would form the perfect circle.

If you’re strapped for space and want to maximise your floor space potential, a spiral staircase is more than ideal.

They also won’t leave your bank account hanging high and dry and will help you make a bold design statement!

L-shaped (quarter-turn) staircases

The L-shaped staircase, also known as a quarter-turn staircase, features the classic straight style, but with a twist. Literally.

In these designs, the stairs make a 90-degree turn at some point – either near the bottom or the top of the flight – going left or right after a landing.

They’re a bit more difficult and costly to build, but if you’re looking for something more visually appealing than just a straight flight of stairs, the L-shape is the way to go.

U-shaped (half-turn) staircases

Popular in office buildings, the U-shaped (or half-turn) staircase style takes the L-shape to a whole new level.

Rather than a 90-degree turn, the U-shape features a 180-degree turn at the top or bottom and they fit seamlessly into most structural plans.

Believe it or not, they’re more compact than other similar staircase styles, so work great if you’re working will a small-medium-sized space, but they are however a little bit more difficult to build.
