Straight Staircases
Although they’re one of the most common and, quite literally, straightforward staircase designs that homeowners choose, you might not have considered one for your own house. They feature a single linear flight with no change in direction, making them the perfect option if you’re looking for something minimalistic.
They’re one of the easiest types of staircases to install and you won’t have to fork out too much money for them to be fitted. The only potential downside of this style is that they need, and can take up, more space than other styles – but if space isn’t a concern for you, they’re a fantastic choice.
L-Shaped Staircases
Visually, these styles can be much more interesting, and they’re also considered to be a lot safer than straight staircase designs. Sometimes known as a quarter turn, L shaped staircases are similar to classic straight styles, but make a 90-degree turn going left or right after a landing space, usually at the bottom or in the middle.
They’re a little trickier to build though, and typically you’ll need landings in these designs, and if they’re visible they can compromise the way everything else looks. However, with proper planning, installation and a good architect, the need for any landing support can be eliminated.
U-Shaped Staircases
Similar to L shaped styles, a landing separates the two parallel flights of stairs – the only difference being that the bend is taken even further. The biggest benefit of a U-shaped staircase design is that they’re sometimes easier to work into an architectural plan, no matter the layout you’re dealing with.
They’re an attractive structure, and also quite practical – especially from a safety standpoint as they offer a resting point partway up. One of the only drawbacks of this design is that they’re among the most difficult staircase styles to build, and you’ll likely have to fork out for a professional to install the staircase for you.

Spiral Staircases
These styles feature a layout centred around a single pole, so if you looked at it from above, it would form a perfect circle. One of the biggest benefits of spiral staircases is their compact design – perfect if you don’t have the luxury of lots of space.
They help you tackle two objectives at once, optimising your space and making a bold design statement. They’re easy to install and don’t cost a fortune, what’s not to love?
The only problem likely to crop up is with carrying large items up or down, and no more than one person can use them at a time – so this is something for you to keep in mind. No matter if you’re making the most of the space you have or if you’re lucky enough to be working with a larger area, a spiral staircase will look wonderful!
Curved Staircases
Unlike U or L shaped staircases, curved staircases have no landings, instead, the stairs are continuous and follow the curve of the handrail. They add a touch of elegance to any home, and for this reason, they’re almost always located front and centre where they can make the best impression.
One of their biggest benefits is their versatility, and although they’re often suited to more traditional interiors, curved staircase styles can be adapted to fit more contemporary interiors too. Their only downfall is that they’re one of the most difficult (and expensive) staircase styles to build. If you’re working with a larger space, like a home foyer for example, then a curved staircase might be just what you need to bring everything together.
