Taking the Measurements for a Staircase
At Pear Stairs, we design and manufacture staircases for many self-build customers. Building a staircase from scratch is a daunting project but it is actually quite easy to get started with it.
To begin designing a staircase you will need to take the following measurements; the opening hole size in the first floor timber joists and the floor to floor height of the staircase.
We rarely come out to the property to measure - we can, but it is more cost effective to either take the measurements yourself or hire a local tradesperson.
Measuring Staircase Height and Opening Size
Measuring can be done by yourself, though we recommend using a qualified and experienced joiner to ensure it is done perfectly. We can attend properties to measure under special request, but this is often a needless expense. When taking the floor to floor measurements, the floor is considered as the surface on which you will walk, lay carpets and such. The measured distance will be the same for differing stair designs, as detailed above.
To create a staircase you will also need to know the precise size of the “stairwell” (the opening hole) in the first floor timber joists. As detailed in the image above, we will require measurements for the trimmer to the trimmer, and the trimmer to the finished wall. If the staircase does not have a wall on any side then the "A" measurement in the diagram would also be "trimmer to trimmer".
Calculating the size of steps, the risers and goings is not something you have to worry about because we do it for you. Our Online Staircreator can also calculate it for you.
The size and dimensions of stair risers and goings must adhere to strict building regulations. These regulations are automatically adhered to by our online Staircreator or you can let our skilled design team work them out for you.
