Acanthus

The acanthus is a herbaceous plant or shrub found in warm regions of the Old World. It is distinctive for its bold flower spikes and its decorative but spiny leaves. Acanthus finial and other architectural features are a conventionalized representation of an acanthus leaf. This style is often found as a decorative form on Corinthian column capitals.
