Regardless of your home’s décor style – be it modern or more traditional – a glass staircase is bound to fit right in and help make your space feel much bigger and brighter.
If you’re considering a glass balustrade, you likely have a few questions – such as if they’re safe. And easy to clean? So in this article, our design experts here at Pear Stairs reveal everything you need to know before you get started on your staircase transformation.
Which glass is best for staircases?
All of the best glass staircase components are made from toughened, laminated glass panels – the same kind used for shop windows and car windscreens.
Thanks to their density and robust nature, these kinds of glass panels lend your staircase a whole host of benefits, including.
Sound resistance
If you have a house full of children and pets bounding up and down the stairs all day, the sound reduction will be especially important to you.
The toughened glass panels used for staircases are proven to reduce noise levels by up to 60 dB!
Impact resistance
Not only are toughened glass panels stronger, but they’re also much more impact resistant and protective compared to ordinary glass - making them perfect for glass staircase applications.
Versatility
Of course, toughened glass staircase panels aren’t just about safety. They’re a great option if you’re concerned about finding a material that matches the rest of your interior.
Because they’re clear, they go with everything and allow you to play around with the rest of your décor as much as you like - without having to worry about finding something that pairs with your staircase.
Are glass staircases safe?
Absolutely!
Professionally manufactured, installed and legislation-compliant glass staircases are incredibly secure. And all of our glass staircase parts here at Pear Stairs are made from toughened, laminated glass which, as we’ve established, is much stronger than everyday glass.
For extra peace of mind, every glass panel used in our staircase designs is marked with something known as a ‘kitemark’ – a symbol of quality to help identify glazing solutions that are at the pinnacle of safety and reliability.
Are glass staircases hard to clean?
Not at all!
The most your glass balustrade will need is a good wipe down once a week when you’re cleaning other glass furnishings around your home.
For the best results, use a soft, microfibre cloth, and solution of warm water and a small amount of washing-up liquid – adding a touch of lemon juice or vinegar if there’s a particularly stubborn stain.
Use a dry cloth and buff your balustrade gently in circular motions to get rid of any remaining spots, streaks and smudges, and bring the surface back to a beautiful reflective polish.
What’s the best way to incorporate glass into my staircase design?
There are a couple of different ways you can incorporate glass into your staircase design.
One of the most popular is glass spindles.
They’re a stunning modern take on the traditional staircase feature, and they make a wonderful addition to oak staircases in particular, creating the perfect balance between modern and traditional.
Alternatively, you could switch your old wooden risers to glass instead.
A stair riser is a vertical space that sits between two steps, which can be left open or closed depending on your design preferences.
With clear glass risers, you’re essentially getting the best of both worlds – but, of course, with the extra safety!
