Pulpit PST-4 newels are the shortened version of standard PST-4 newels and are usually required when an up-coming handrail meets the post below the turning, like on the inside corner of a 90 degree winding turn.
These large posts are used as a structural element to anchor the handrail that will extend below the floor and subfloor to the bottom of the floor joists where it is bolted in place.
With open landings, a newel post can extend below the landing to produce a decorative newel drop and when the railing ends in a wall a half newel post is usually used.
