168. The Fire Station Staircase
Dyfed
This is an ideal example of a staircase that meets the Ambulant Disabled Regulations required on certain public staircases. The 1.2 metre wide treads are 28mm thick with flush nosings and a redwood handrail on both sides. A stop-chamfered style was chosen for the balustrade to give a solid but stylish appearance in a very active workplace. The treads and risers were covered in a contrasting vinyl and distinguishable edging strips fitted as a requirement.
