Standard Handrail Low Profile
(LTHR Handrail)

This is similar to the THR Handrail above, except a lower profile. The only difference between the two is the aesthetic appearance.

Mopstick Handrail

For use with a staircase where a wall is on either side or where the staircase is too wide and the building regulations require an additional handrail.


Note: Brackets are required with this handrail.

Pigs Ear Handrail

For use with a staircase where a wall is on either side or where the staircase is too wide and the building regulations require an additional handrail. Fixed directly onto the wall, therefore no brackets are required.

CONTINUOUS HANDRAIL

Below are the parts required for continuous handrail. Used where the handrail runs over the top of the newel.

 

Continuous Handrail
(THR Handrail)

This superb handrail adds a touch of elegance to any staircase. This handrail can be used in standard handrails but is the only handrail which can be used in conjunction with continuous fittings.

Note:
Only one type of Newel Post can be used with continuous handrail, PST5, where the handrail actually passes over the newel.

CONTINUOUS HANDRAIL FITTINGS

Staircase Handrail Horizontal 90° Turn
(HTRN)

The horizontal turn will give your handrail a continuous flow to your staircase.

Staircase Handrail Left or Right Hand Volute.

(LHVOL or RHVOL)


The volute will complete the look for a luxurious staircase. Up Ramp included but not joined.

Staircase Handrail Opening Cap
(OP CAP)

The opening cap is an alternative to the volute used at the beginning of the handrail on your staircase, can also be used at the end of the run.

Staircase Handrail Straight Cap
(STR-CAP)

The straight cap is used where a run of balcony
is over 2.4m and a newel (PST5) is required for extra support to the staircase balcony.

Staircase Horizontal Cap Turn
(HTRNCPTN)

Similar to the horizontal turn, used when handrail is supported by a newel post (usually PST5), to allow extra support to your staircase. The cap is positioned above the newel for a more ornate look to your staircase.

Staircase Vertical Turn
(VT)

A vertical turn will give your handrail a continuous flow to your staircase. Available with a groove to suit any size spindle up to 41mm. 35mm and 41mm grooves are standard. Should you require alternative size groove please contact a member of the Pear Stairs team.

CONTINUOUS HANDRAIL SYSTEM

A continuous handrail system uses straight lengths of handrail connected to handrail fittings and ramps, allowing the handrail to flow over the tops of newels.

This newel sits in a square base newel, the only other type of newel used is the volute newel and volute spindle that sits on a bullnose step (or curtail step) at the bottom of the stairs, as below.

Please Note: The volute spindle is shown as 41mm, they can be either 32mm, 35mm or 41mm.

The continuous handrail newel is used at all points of the staircase except where a volute is used at the bottom of a staircase. In this situation the volute newel is specifically designed for fixing to the solid part of a curtail step.

This superb handrail adds a touch of elegance to a staircase. It is a popular handrail choice among more traditional designs, though with options such as white primed available along with a variety of different timber types, there are design variations to suit almost any style.

Standard Handrail Low Profile
(LTHR Handrail)

This is like the THR Handrail, except it has a lower and far more subtle profile. This slimmer aesthetic is favoured in more contemporary staircase designs.

Mop Stick Handrail

A mop stick handrail is ideal for a staircase where a wall is on either side or the staircase is too wide and necessitates the need for an additional handrail due to building regulations. This handrail requiress brackets of which there is a wide and ornate selection available through the Pear Stairs online shop.

Pig's Ear Handrail

Much like a mop stick handrail, a pig's ear handrail is suited to staircases with a wall on either side or where building regulations require an additional handrail. Unlike a mop stick, this handrail is fixed directly on to the wall and does not require brackets. The streamlined design and smooth curves of this handrail are appealling to most tastes.

Continuous Handrail

A continuou handrail gives a staircase a flowing form, often preferred in modern homes. Only one type of newel post can be used with continuous handrails, the Continuous PST5. This is a solid all round design that is available in a variety of different beautiful timbers.

The horizontal turn will give your handrail a continuous flowing form that is simultaneously grand and elegant.

Staircase Handrail Volute (Right or Left Hand) 

The volute is a beautiful addition to a handrail that completes the luxurious flow of a continuous handrail. Volutes include an up ramp that is joined seperately.

(OP Cap)

An opening cap is an alternative to a volute that provides a more abrupt end to a handrail. Without a volute a continuous handrail has a clean and neater finish that may be preferable for contemporary designs.

Staircase Handrail Straight Cap (STR-CAP)

When a balcony runs for over 2.4 metres a newel is required (PST5) for extra support. A straight cap sits on top of the newel.

Staircase Horizontal Cap Turn (HTRNCPTN)

Similar to the horizontal turn, a horizontal turn is used when a handrail cornr is supported by a PST5 newel post. These sorners provide an ornate touch to a staircase design.

Staircase Vertical Turn

A vertical turn keeps the flow of a continuous handrail going through sharp corners. These handrail features are available with a groove large enough to accomodate spindles up to 41mm. Alternative sized grooves are available on request.

Continuous Handrail "A"

A continuous handrail can be designed to fit most spaces and design restrictions thanks to the variety of component combinations. These diagrams demonstrate a continuous handrail installed on a "Dog Leg" with a straight step. There is an up ramp, a horizontal turn and a vertical turn in the handrail.

Continuous Handrail Corner Configuration "B" 

Here a staircase is illustrated with a straight step and landing "Dog Lef" configuration. The handrail detailed here features up ramps, vertical turns, straight caps and a horizontal turn.
