The above newels can be used as shown in the drawing below. This is the cheapest means for manufacturing staircases.
Length of Newel
The length of the newel to purchase for the landings, top and bottom of staircases are, in most cases 1500mm long, it depends on the style of staicase and how deep your trimmers are. Pear Stairs sell more newels this length than any other length available.
If you are renovating a staircase then the length of the other newels are taken by first measuring the length of the existing newels. Then purchase the next largest newel length in the chart below:
Standard Newel Lengths
|
1500 mm 2400 mm 3000 mm 3600 mm 4500 mm |
So for example, if you measure an existing newel at 2050mm you have to purchase a newel 2400mm long. You can cut it to length when it arrives on site.
Turned Staircase Newels
If you want to change the top half of the newel to a fancy design, this is also easy, first you need to decide which style of turned newel you require (that will sit on a base newel). Your choice of style includes: Georgian, Fluted Georgian, Oxford, Fluted Oxford, Provincial and Twist, see below
Georgian
The Georgian style is our most popular choice. Shown here in Pine, it is available in 70mm and 83mm in addition to our Standard 90mm. With its elegant but simple design it will suit most styles of home.

NOTE: All of the above fit onto a base newel, you now need to work out (for the style you have chosen) which part to purchase and fit on a base newel i.e. which one of the newel types (PST1, PST2, PST3, PST4, PST5 and Pulpit) do you require for the correct application:
Staircase Newel Types
The following is an explanation of how you choose the correct newel type:
PST- 1
Usually used to match older staircases, more vogue nowadays to use the longer PST-3. A PST-1 is rarely used nowadays. Was used at the bottom of a staircase.
|

|
PST-2
Used where the rake is at 900mm but the landing is at 1100mm (say for a public staircase), again rarely used, so used in special situations where handrails meet at different heights.
|

|
PST-3
The most used newel post type that Pear Stairs has in stock. Used in landings, especially where the horizontal landing rail meets an up coming sloping rail.
|

|
PST-4
Used on the inside corner of a winder stairs with four winder steps.
|

|
PST-5
Used where the handrail passes over the top of the continuous handrail newel.
|

|
Pulpit
Used on the inside corner of a winder stairs with three winder steps.

Below are drawings showing different configurations of newel post types:
Example 1.
This is called a "dog leg" staircase with a bullnose step.
|

|
Example 2.
This is a quarter turn staircase with landing.
|

|
Length of Base:
To work out the length of the base for your turned newel.
For Landings, bottom of stairs and top of stairs
you require a PST-3 (turned newel) and 700mm newel base.
See below:
For your other newels you can measure the existing length. Take off the turned newel length, then go the next size up for your newel base, see below:
Standard Base Lengths |
500 mm 700 mm 915 mm 1375 mm 1500 mm 1800 mm 2100 mm 2400 mm 2700 mm 3000 mm 3300 mm 3600 mm |
Example
So, if your existing newel is 2407mm you would choose a newel base as follows:
2407mm - 790mm = 1617mm
Nearest next largest base size = 1800mm
Order PST-3 with 1800mm Newel Base
