 THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF HANDRAIL SYSTEMS.


There are Standard Handrails and Continuous handrails. The following explains the differences:

STANDARD HANDRAIL

Below is a list of standard handrails:

Standard Handrail (PHR Handrail)

Unique to Pear Stairs. 
This handrail has a well rounded design.  Providing good grip, an ideal handrail to compliment your staircase, supplied at a competitive price.

THR Handrail

This superb handrail adds a touch of elegance to any staircase.

Standard Handrail Low Profile
(LTHR Handrail)

This is similar to the THR Handrail above, except a lower profile.  The only difference between the two is the aesthetic appearance.

Mopstick Handrail

For use with a staircase where a wall is on either side or where the staircase is too wide and the building regulations require an additional handrail.


Note:  Brackets are required with this handrail.

Pigs Ear Handrail

For use with a staircase where a wall is on either side or where the staircase is too wide and the building regulations require an additional handrail.  Fixed directly onto the wall, therefore no brackets are required.

CONTINUOUS HANDRAIL

Below are the parts required for continuous handrail.  Used where the handrail runs over the top of the newel.

Continuous Handrail
(THR Handrail)

This superb handrail adds a touch of elegance to any staircase.  This handrail can be used in standard handrails but is the only handrail which can be used in conjunction with continuous fittings.

Newel Post
 (PST5)

Note: 
Only one type of Newel Post can be used with continuous handrail, PST5, where the handrail actually passes over the newel.

CONTINUOUS HANDRAIL FITTINGS

Staircase Handrail Horizontal 90° Turn
(HTRN)

The horizontal turn will give your handrail a continuous flow to your staircase.

Staircase Handrail Left or Right Hand Volute.
(LHVOL or RHVOL)

The volute will complete the look for a luxurious staircase.  Up Ramp included but not joined.

Staircase Handrail Opening Cap
(OP CAP)

The opening cap is an alternative to the volute used at the beginning of the handrail on your staircase,  can also be used at the end of the run.

Staircase Handrail Straight Cap
(STR-CAP)

The straight cap is used where a run of balcony
 is over 2.4m and a newel (PST5) is required for extra support to the staircase balcony.

Staircase Horizontal Cap Turn
(HTRNCPTN)

Similar to the horizontal turn, used when handrail
  is supported by a newel post (usually PST5), to allow extra support to your staircase. The cap is positioned above the newel for a more ornate look to your staircase.

Staircase Vertical Turn
(VT)

A vertical turn will give your handrail a
 continuous flow to your staircase.  Available with a groove to suit any size spindle up to 41mm. 35mm and 41mm grooves are standard.  Should you require alternative size groove please contact a member of the Pear Stairs team.

CONTINUOUS HANDRAIL SYSTEM


A continuous handrail system uses straight lengths of handrail connected to handrail fittings and ramps, allowing the handrail to flow over the tops of newels.

Note: 
This newel sits in a square base newel, the only other type of newel used is the volute newel and volute spindle that sits on a bullnose step (or curtail step) at the bottom of the stairs, as below.

Note
:  The volute spindle is shown as 41mm, they can be either  32mm, 35mm or 41mm.

The continuous handrail newel is used at all points of the staircase except where a volute is used at the bottom of a staircase.  In this situation the volute newel is specifically designed for fixing to the solid part of a curtail step.
